Diver plus budgie cage plus shark equals stupid: VIDEO

An Australian man who wanted to experience “extreme cage diving” with a shark in ocean waters almost lost his life when he opted to use a small budgie cage as his only protection instead of a proper steel shark cage. 27-year old Shawn Harrington says he is deeply embarrassed and humbled after attempting the stunt, using only a small bird cage over his head and upper torso as protection. Harrington was on a boat travelling off the Gold Coast of Australia when he decided to jump into the water wearing the budgie cage over his head in order to swim with a shark that was already in the water after being landed by a fisherman onboard.

‘I just thought, “I gotta get out of here”,’ Mr Harrington said of the experience in an interview with Channel Nine’s Today.

‘I saw the shark coming and threw the budgie cage in front of it and it just bounced off it. I thought I would just jump in, get a couple of shots and hop out but the thing just went crazy.

‘It wigged out and came at me. It’s probably one of the dumbest things I’ve ever done.’

Harrington thought it would be funny to film the whole episode, but no sooner had he jumped into the water wearing the budgie cage than the shark same swimming in his direction. The shark bumped up against the cage, all the while Harrington was screaming for help. Luckily, he managed to climb back on board the boat before the shark was able to take a chunk out of his body. Harrington admits that using the bird cage as his only protection was very stupid.
