Doctor stabs shark, stitches wound pub
South Island, New Zealand – A junior doctor channeled his inner Rambo this past Saturday when he was attacked by a shark swimming in the waters near Colac Bay with some buddies. The man, James Grant, fought off his would be predator with a knife and then swam back to shore bleeding from the bite on his leg and stitched up the wounds himself. He then traveled to a local pub to enjoy himself a brew after which time his friends prevailed upon to go to the local hospital for treatment.
The 24-year-old explained that he was in water roughly 2 meters (~7 ft.) deep when he experienced a sudden jerk motion thrust him under water. Initially, he supposed it was a prank by one of his friends. No sooner than he realized it was a shark, he told himself he would have to fight it off. He drew out his knife and began stabbing it repeatedly. He reckons he shanked it a good number of times. Some of the bite wounds on his leg were 5cm (~2 inches) in length. He finally went to the Invercargill hospital for treatment, but come Monday, he was back at work. Like a tough guy out of an old Western film, he merely suffered some flesh wounds.

If there is one thing you can say about James Grant of New Zealand, it’s that he manages to stay cool and focused during a crisis. While spearfishing off the coast of South Island last weekend, Grant, a junior doctor, found himself under attack by a sevengill shark. After feeling a sharp tug on his leg, he was shocked to discover the cause, but immediately pulled out a knife and took a few jabs at the huge fish. Grant managed to swim away from the shark and towards some rocks on the shore to assess the damage.
Using a first aid kit from his car, Grant was able to stitch up the 5cm long slash on his leg before joining his buddies for a cold beer at the nearby tavern in Colac Bay. When he noticed his leg was bleeding, he headed for Invercargill Hospital to receive emergency medical attention. Grant expressed relief that the shark didn’t take off his leg and promises to continue enjoying spearfishing as soon as his leg has completely healed. He only wishes he had been able to finish off his attacker in order to be recognized as winner of the Tavern’s fishing competition.
