Don Cherry: ‘Are we nuts?’ For Sending Nearly $50-M To Haiti Dave O
While many people may see Canada’s sending of millions of dollars to the island of Haiti, one Canadian sportscaster is not so impressed.
Don Cherry, the host of Hock Night In Canada on CBC sent out a tweet in response to the gesture, asking “Are We Nuts?”
Cherry stated his disapproval by explaining that his is like everyone else in Canada who wants to help countries that are less fortunate all around the world, but says “sometimes it makes you wonder.”
“You know, I am one of those guys, like most people in Canada, we like to help the countries all over the world. But sometimes it makes you wonder,” Cherry tweeted.
Tweeting from his twitter handle @CoachsCornerCBC, Cherry continued his rant by complaining that Canada gave $49.5 million dollars to Haiti the year before.
These words may not have hit such a large nerve if they weren’t expressed five days before the 3rd anniversary commemorating that tragic, massive earthquake that took 300,000 lives and destroyed the homes of 1.5 million Haitians.
“Maybe it’s just me. But Canada gave Haiti 49.5 million dollars last year. Are we nuts?”
Cherry took the opportunity to also slam the Canadian health care system stating that people have to wait to long for ambulances to arrive and to be called in the waiting room. Cherry complained that the country doesn’t spend enough money on taking care of the health needs of it’s natives but it can send 50 million dollars in aid to another country.
“We’ve got a guy dying in Toronto waiting 3 hours for an ambulance,” the controversial star of Hockey Night in Canada tweeted to his nearly 118,000 followers.
“We got people waiting 7, 8, 10 hours, if they’re lucky, in a waiting room with one doctor for a zillion people.
“We nickel and dime our doctors, nurses and veterans plus a million other services. Yet we can send almost 50 million to Haiti.”
The tweets sent by Don Cherry, and possibly his friend Kathy Broderick who is a producer on Hockey Night in Canada, went out to his 118,000 Twitter followers.
