Dutch Royals Get Pelted With Tomatoes
The Dutch King Willem-Alexander, as well as his wife, Queen Maxima, were reportedly on their way to a staged concert event in Moscow this past Saturday. They did not quite reach their destination before suddenly becoming the target of flying tomatoes. The fruit throwing melee was apparently the result of a concentrated protest effort on the part of opposition activists.
None of the fruit actually hit the Dutch king or his queen. Responsibility for the rather bizarre and untimely incident was swiftly taken credit for by Eduard Limonov. Limonov is, of course, the leader of the notorious (and nationally banned)National Bolshevik party. Two National Bolshevik party members were quickly arrested, although specific charges were not listed.
According to Limonov, the tomato throwing protest was enacted in order to draw attention to the case of a fellow political activist, Alexander Dolmatov, who recently committed suicide in a detention center in the Netherlands. The tomato assault came just after the Dutch King met with Premier Vladimir Putin on Saturday afternoon. No official statement has been issued by the royals.
