Global Warming still remains a hotly contested issue with some prominent think tanks such as the US-based Cato Institute arguing that a leveling off of average global temperatures is proof positive that the earth’s temperatures are not warming. Admittedly, the scandal involving the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) fabricating and manipulating data to support global warming has given critics plenty of justification in their opposition to any regulations that would adversely affect the economy. It should be noted that the CRU is the primary provider of global warming data and if that data is shown to be “more fiction than science”, what does that say of the entire movement based on their data?
Be that as it may, believers in global warming remain undaunted and have countered that average global temperatures are only one form of proof of global warming. The other one is how many days of “extreme temperatures” occur thorough out the year. Their findings are reported in the Nature Climate Change journal. Nature Climate Change is considered the foremost authoritative peer-review journal in the field of environmental sciences with an impact rating of 14.472 as of 2012. As per the report, extreme warm temperatures are occurring with increasing frequency even over the past decade despite average temperatures remaining relatively constant.
“Observational data show a continued increase of hot extremes over land during the so-called global warming hiatus,” scientists in Switzerland, Australia and Canada wrote in the journal Nature Climate Change.
What impact does extreme temperatures have on the environment? For one thing, they affect farms where crops can be adversely impacted by the weather. They can affect ecosystems impacting wildlife and even affect human health. The study suggests that the occurrence of extreme temperatures are of greater concern than overall increases in the temperature. Scientists who believe in global warming consider the current lull in average temperature increases a mere “hiatus” in the global warming trend and cite the steady increase in extreme temperatures as proof that the dangers of global warming are increasing.
