Federal Guidelines in Canada Say Cellphone and Wi-Fi Radio Waves Safe for Now

Toronto, Canada – Code 6 is adequate for now with one caveat notes the eight member panel of the Royal Society of Canada in their recent report. Code 6 is the section of health code dealing with the electronic emissions from cell phones and Wi-Fi devices to ensure they do not exceed adverse levels for the general public. Health Canada had previously requested that the Royal Society of Canada conduct a review of Code 6 and determine if it adequately safeguards the general public or requires modifications.

The conclusion is that Code 6, as it is presently constituted, does ensure that the public is kept safe from what are called radiofrequency hazards. The report stated that no changes are needed to current mandates for limits on electromagnetic exposure. However, the report did state that additional research is needed to see if there exists a cause and effect relationship between radiofrequency waves and cancer. Really? That was kind of the purpose of the whole review in the first place. It appears to be the proverbial “talking out of both sides of one’s mouth” to state that Code 6 achieves it goals on the one hand and then state that additional research is needed to see if the current limits expose people to a cancer risk.

Admittedly, such a correlation between cell phones & Wi-Fi devices and cancer would prove to be highly controversial and likely played a role in the diplomatic approach taken in the report. For now, Health Canada is said to be taking the report under advisement. They will seek input from the general public during forthcoming “public consultation” meetings they will conduct. This will be in addition to expert advice they are requesting. The group Canadians for Safe Technology, who wants to see safeguards in place against the dangers they believe are caused by radiofrequency hazards, believes the report was a sop to the wireless industry, a powerful lobby.
