The MMA community is shocked and disheartened after learning of the tragic death of former MMA fighter Mauricio Zingano today.

Mauricio Zingano has died at age 37 late Monday in Colorado, sources close to the family confirmed to FOX Sports on Tuesday, January 15, 2014. Details surrounding the cause of his death have not been disclosed. Zingano, who made a name for himself as an MMA fighter, leaves behind his wife, Cat Zingano, who is a top-ranked current UFC bantamweight contender.

Cat Zingano, who was set for a title shot late next month before suffering a knee injury, issued a formal statement. Part of the statement read, “Late yesterday evening, I learned that my husband and soul mate of seven years, Mauricio Zingano, has passed away. My life has changed irrevocably. I am shocked and deeply saddened. Thankfully, my family and friends are coming together to provide the support I need. I am grateful for them as I know there are many difficult days ahead.”

Mauricio, who also served as his wife’s head coach, owned MMA gyms in Colorado. He was a well-respected fighter. After fighting professionally and earning two wins, he turned his attention to teaching. The close-knit MMA community is still in shock over his sudden passing.
