For the second year in a row the HBO series, “Game of Thrones”, has taken the top spot in the listing of the most pirated television shows. The series, based on the fantasy novels of George R. R. Martin has been a runaway hit for HBO, and that popularity has translated into widespread pirate copying of the series.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the finale of the Shows third season has been downloaded almost 6 million times by file sharers. Michael Lombardo, the chief of HBO programming described the massive downloading of the show as a back handed compliment, seeing it as tribute to the success of the show, and claimed that the piracy hadn’t made a dent in the DVD sales of the popular series.

In the previous season 2012,”Game of Thrones” was also the leader, being downloaded over 4 million times. According to torrentfreak.com the vast majority of the downloading takes place overseas, and is done by people who don’t have access to the show in their own countries. They say many would pay to download the shows if they could do so legally.
Other leading shows for the year were shows like “Breaking Bad”, “Dexter”, and The walking dead”.
