girl removed from school trip for eating chocolate with friends

Kerri McCann left ‘astonished’ by school’s treatment of daughter Holli
Pupil was caught taking part in midnight feast during Isle of Wight holiday
Headteacher rang and said she had broken school’s behavioural ‘charter’
Asked to come and pick her up immediately from hotel
Ms McCann had to borrow money to pay for the drive from Hertfordshire
Has since withdrawn Holli from school and made a formal complaint
After being caught sharing chocolate with friends in her hotel room, 11 year old, Holli McCann, was sent home from her school’s end of year field trip. Her mother, Kerri McCann was contacted and required to drive the 160 mile round trip to come pick up her daughter.
Ms. McCann cares full time for her autistic son; she and Holli spent months in advance saving for the year end trip. The trip, which was supposed to last a week long, cost the family £300, plus an additional £130 to go pick up her daughter. Holli McCann wrote home to her mom in a note about breaking the chocolate rule; the letter was then opened and read by one of the trip’s chaperones. Her room was immediately searched, including stripping down the lining of her suitcase.
According to the Beaufort House Hotel where the students were residing, food and chocolate is not allowed in the rooms. In order to maintain cleanliness and prevent any damage to rooms, anything other than water must be consumed in their downstairs area.
Ms. McCann is appalled at the way the staff on the field trip behaved and has subsequently removed her daughter from Bromet Primary School.
I am still in shock, I complained to the head but she still hasn’t contacted me after making me go all the way to the Isle of Wight, which ended up costing me an absolute fortune,’ she said.
‘I am furious that they read her letter, it is like being in prison. It’s not like she is five – she is 11 and deserves privacy in what she writes to her mum.
‘Holli said she was really upset because they emptied her toiletry bag into the sink and pulled out the lining in her suitcase.
‘She was very upset for a few days after coming back.’
A Hertfordshire County Council spokesman said: ‘Before the Year 6 trip to the Isle of Wight, parents and pupils were asked to sign a behaviour charter which clearly outlines how pupils should behave during the trip.
