Half-tonne meteorite recovered from Russian Lake (PHOTO)
The meteorite was fractured when it was discovered. After the extraction, scientists immediately tried to weigh it. Unfortunately, due to the fracture, it quickly started to crumble. The scientific crews scrambled to place the pieces back on the scale using cranes. The scale malfunctioned at 1,255 pounds.
The next step is to confirm that this actually is a meteorite. Five rocks have been pulled from the lake since operations commenced in May, but only four out of five have been confirmed fragments of the February meteor. Scientists are confident the tests will confirm that this is in fact part of the meteor, actually the largest part of the meteor discovered to date.
The residents of the remote region are hoping that the meteor will attract tourists to their area.
