Harvard Professor Apologizes for Gay Slur During Speech

Niall Ferguson, a professor at Harvard University, had some serious explaining to do after he made comments about economist John Maynard Keyes during a conference in California that were homophobic.

Ferguson has issued a hasty formal apology for indicating during his remarks that since Keyes was gay and childless, he really had no stake in future generations or policies that helped them to thrive. Many in the audience were too stunned to reply to his anti-gay slur.

Now Ferguson has made what he calls an “unqualified” apology for his senseless remarks in a written apology posted on his website, calling his evaluation of Keyes both insensitive and stupid. He further clarified that just because Keyes was gay did not mean he was automatically childless nor uncaring about future generations.

He also personally apologized to his friends, students and colleagues, both heterosexual and homosexual, for what he called disappointing behavior. Many critics say that Ferguson’s careless remarks reveals the undercurrent of homophobia that still exists in many corridors of higher education and reflects the thinking of bigots who are drinking at the local pub rather than working as a professor of history at one of the most respected educational institutions in the world.
