Shoplifting Up Again in 2013

Every year the Christmas season brings with it an increase in shoplifting. According to an NBC News study, shoplifting apprehensions nationwide averaged over 80000 during November and December of 2011.This was an increase of nearly 9 to 14 percent over other months. Studies have confirmed that this is an annual event. The Study, from the Institute for criminal Justice Ethics, showed an over 5 percent increase in 2009 and over 7 percent in 2007.

The shoplifting in American stores by both customers and worker cost American retailers over 112 billion dollars, with the thefts being committed by both individuals and shoplifting gangs. These costs are passed on to consumers.

Most shoplifters are stealing during the Christmas season for themselves, not because they want to give gifts. The motives of the shoplifters vary. Some believe they have justifiable reasons, like trying to get by on a small income, or employees who steal because they feel unappreciated.

Experts say however, most shoplifters steal for the emotional high it gives them. They experience thrills from the danger of getting caught and the excitement of stealing something. For many Shoplifting becomes addictive, like a drug. However the high vanishes when they get caught and have to face the consequences of their actions.
