He suffered three large cuts on his back and legs. The slash in his back caused extensive damage. Police later confirmed that after the incident, the attacker used a motorbike to flee the scene. According to the acting Superintendent of Hong Kong police; Kwan King-pan, police are in the process of searching for two men in connection with this attack.

Lau was hired as editor of the prestigious Hong Kong newspaper in 2012. He was replaced last month in a sudden transfer to the parent company’s electronic publishing unit.

Lau, has been replaced by an inexperienced journalist from Malaysia, according to the source. The unexpected departure from the newspaper has led to a series of protests across the city regarding the freedom of press as Lau was known to make critical statements of the government.

A spokesperson for The Hong Kong Journalists Associated released a statement that said they were all shocked and angered over the recent attack.
