In the Face of Mountin Criticism, Costco Apologizes for Bible Fiction Flap
The question of fact vs. fiction is one which can be raised in all religions. Ultimately, what a person chooses to accept as being true will come down to a matter of faith which is why, out of respect, sacred religious texts are placed in a category all their own such as “Religion” or “Spirituality”, etc.
Now, Costco has issued a formal apology to the public regarding the labeling of the Holy Bible as a book of “Fiction”.
“Costco’s distributor mislabeled a small percentage of the Bibles, however, we take responsibility and should have caught the mistake. We are correcting this with them for future distribution,” the company said. ”We greatly apologize for the error.”
The issue first arose when Pastor Caleb Kaltenbach of the New Discovery Church noticed it while shopping with his wife at the Simi Valley Costco store. He was not able to find a single employee at the store willing to address the issue. His phone call to Costco’s corporate office was ultimately met with the same indifference.
Exasperated, Pastor Kaltenbach tweeted his congregation a picture of the Bible and it ended up going viral. Predictably, an image of being disrespectful if not outright hostile to Christians is not a reputation the company wants the public to have. Thus, an apology was issued. Costco blamed the distributor for the mistake and said it will be corrected on future shipments. There was no word if the “fiction” label will be removed from the current batch of bibles in their inventory.
