Japanese Pickle Helps Cure the Flu

Every year, around fall, individual instances of the flu start to germinate. Many choose to get flu shots and stock up on cold and flu medicine. But, what if there was a cure? Well, new studies have shown that a Japanese pickle probiotic drink, may be able to do so.

The Japanese pickled turnip contains Lactobacillus bugs. They are thought to have properties that help boost the immune system. In addition, they are believed to have the ability to fight off the flu. With this pickle, strains of H1N1 and the H7N9 avian flu may be preventable.

The drink was tested on mice, and now, it has moved forward with human testing. They were previously tested on mice. Naoko Waki, from the Japanese food company Kagome, claims, “Our results show that when a particular strain of Lactobacillus brevis is eaten by mice, it has protective effects against influenza virus infection.”

Fans of the pickle have long proclaimed its superfood properties, and those are finally coming to light. The study reports are published in the journal Letters in Applied Microbiology. Scientists think the layer of sugars, also known as exopolysaccharides, which coats the stomach against stomach acids may be the key.
