Labradoodle Creator Repents from Igniting Designer Dog Craze

A Labradoodle is a crossbred dog created by crossing the Labrador Retriever and the Standard, Miniature or Toy Poodle. The term first appeared in 1955, but was not popularized until 1988, when the mix began to be used as an allergen-free guide dog. Currently, they are not considered a breed by any major fancier and breeder organization. Not all Labradoodles are hypoallergenic, but it is a quality that many look for and appreciate in this breed of dog. Since there is no real hypoallergenic dog, the term is often used loosely.

New York – It was the late 1980s when Wally Conron first bred his prize Labradors and poodles giving rise to what he termed were “labrodoodles”. However, in the two decades since that time, it has become a fashionable item to own exotically mated canines with catchy names which are collectively known as “designer dogs”. Now, Conron looks back on his pioneer breeding work and, to quote Arnold Schwarzenegger from the movie “The Last Stand”, “feels differently”.

In fact, Conron not only feels different, but he would turn back from what he did if only he could. When a person feels that strongly about something, there’s no better way to describe the emotion than to say they repents of the decision. Why? Well, it’s got more to do with the increase in abandoned dogs he encounters. If people weren’t so fixated on chic upscale pets, they might otherwise give these lovable ordinary dogs a much needed home.

However, his motives for creating the labrodoodle were altruistic. The Australian received a special request from a couple in Hawaii that need a pet to balance the wife’s impaired vision and the husband’s allergic reaction. The labrodoodle was the pet that satisfied their unique needs.
