‘Liberty Leading the People’ Painting Defaced: 20-Year-Old Woman Arrested

Historic Painting Vandelized at the Louvre

A 28 year old woman is under arrest for defacing a classic painting with a black marker as it hung in the famed Louvre gallery in northern France.

The woman wrote “AE911TRUTH” on “Liberty Leading the People” by Eugene Delacroix. AE911TRUTH is the name of a website run by a group of conspiracy theorists who believe that the truth has not been told about the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

The Delacroix painting was created after the 1830 French Revolution. The painting features a woman brandishing a flag and leading a group past the fallen wounded. The painting has been an icon of French history and its image has been used on postage stamps in France.

The painting was not permanently damaged as the marker failed to penetrate the first layer of varnish that protects the work. The historic painting was on loan from the main branch of the Louvre located in Paris.
