Lily James Gets Online Abuse After Nabbing Abbey Role
Actress Lily James’ addition to the popular “Downton Abbey” television show cast did not go unnoticed by fans of Jessica Brown Findlay whom she replaced. James’ Twitter account was filled with messages expressing anger, hate and dismay in reaction to her arrival as Lady Rose MacClare. James tried to be philosophical about the outpouring of rage directed at her, saying she simply took it as a sign that viewers loved Findley’s Lady Sybil character so much that they couldn’t bear to see her depart the show and be replaced by James’ new character.
James admits she was thrown for a loop for quite some time after reading so many negative messages, accusing her of being ugly as well as being nasty. She says her self-esteem took such a beating that she asked for advice from her co-star, Tom Cullen, who portrays Lord Gillingham. After James told him how much hate mail her Twitter account was accumulating since she joined the show, Cullen dispensed some much needed sensible advice.
He informed James that the best course of action for the 24-year old actress was to stay true to her character and completely disregard the negative opinions being expressed by certain vocal fans.
