19-year-old former cheerleader Lucy Millsap may appear to be a prissy darling, but there’s certainly more to her than physical beauty.
Millsap bested two hundred competitors at the Okie Noodling Festival in Oklahoma which annual competition is now in its 14th year. She did so in the toughest category of all: the Men’s Big Fish category. Millsap had to capture a 72 pound catfish with nothing but her bare hands.
The act of bare-handed fishing is called noodling and is only legal in eleven of the fifty United States. In the competition’s history, no woman has ever won. Those wishing to participate in the sport use their arms as bait.
The noodlers wave their arms around in a catfish hole and the fish attack in a defensive bite.
The sheer size of the fish put the noodlers’ fingers at risk not to mention bones due to the weight of the fish. Millsap herself has gone to the hospital in times past for noodling-related injuries. She was so confident in her skills that she registered in the men’s event because she wanted to compete against the highest standards. Millsap won the grand prize of $1,500 for her victory.
