New non-surgical male infertility testing might become available in the near future according to a lab in Toronto, Canada.

Researchers from Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital, with funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, discovered two proteins in seminal fluid that could potentially be used to create a series of new tests. These tests would replace existing invasive testicular biopsy testing used to determine certain types of non-obstructive male infertility. They would also help to determine an infertile man’s chances of having children.

According to Mount Sinai’s Head of Urology Dr. Keith Jarvi, current testing can result in hours of wasted time trying to determine if a male with non-obstructive infertility even has sperm within the tissues of his testes. One of the proteins, TEX101, has already proven within the lab to be a successful predictor of lack of sperm in non-obstructive infertility cases.

Jarvi believes commercial implementation is truly only a few years away. The medical research discoveries of 16 top Toronto universities are handed over to MaRS Innovation for commercialization, and the firm has already started to devote extensive time and money toward research into turning this discovery into a viable testing reality.
