Homeless Man Arrested for Spraying Police Officers with Urine

Chicago, IL – 41-year-old African-American Derrick Ray has been homeless for years and reported suffers from mental illness. The latter certainly explains his behavior. He was arrested following an incident Wednesday night at 10:00PM when officers were called to an Uptown district apartment building on 4600 block of N. Broadway to respond to a call regarding a possible trespasser.

The two officers on the scene attempted to remove Ray from the premises when he either attacked or attempted to ward off the officers by spraying them with pepper spray and bottles of urine which he had in his possession: big mistake.

Ray has now been charged with one count of misdemeanor count of criminal trespassing, three misdemeanor counts of resisting peace officers, and get this, three felony counts of aggravated assault. Now, urine is something better left unconsidered and in the sewer lines, but felony “aggravated” assault charges? It looks like the officers may have put the proverbial thumb on the scale when weighing Mr. Ray’s charges.

Regardless, Ray was due to appear in court yesterday. A city alderman has said that residents have been fearful of Ray harming someone due to his mental illness. Hopefully, he can receive treatment instead of incarceration.
