Fisherman Survives Shark Attack While Wading in Australia

Shark attacks often happen in deep ocean waters but a fisherman in New South Wales received bites on both legs when a shark attacked him when he was wading in water that was only knee-deep.

Alan Saunders was attempting to release a shark that had gotten caught up in his net when another shark unexpectedly approached and began biting his legs. Judging from Saunders’ description of his seafaring attacker, it is likely that he was bitten by a Grey Nurse shark. This variety of shark preys upon other sea life, including dolphins, sharks and swordfish, and can exceed 2.2 meters when fully grown.

Although the 51-year old fisherman sustained deep puncture wounds from the attack on both his right and left legs, his injuries were not fatal and he was able to get out of the water in enough time before the shark inflicted further damage.

Saunders was taken for medical assistance to an infirmary in nearby Newcastle after he received first aid
on the beach and a rescue helicopter was called in to transport him as quickly as possible for emergency medical help. Several New South Wales beaches have been the site of shark attacks in recent month, causing temporary closures for everyone’s safety.
