man bikes across San Francisco Bay 45 minutes riding a “BayCycle”

San Francisco Bay, CA – 41-year-old Judah Schiller may be on the cusp of a new revolution in the world of bicycling with his invention called the BayCycle. The invention takes inflatable pontoons and fastens them to a road bicycle. The unit includes a pedal-powered propeller so that a cyclist can literally bike his way across a watery surface.

He tested his unit in front of reporters as he conducted his maiden voyage across the San Francisco East Bay in what he termed as a “serene ride”. Schiller says the water is free of annoying taxi drivers and other vehicles. He found comfort in peddling alongside and at times underneath the Bay Bridge. He cross the bay in 45 minutes.

Admittedly, the vessel doesn’t look stable, but he was able to cross the bay in relatively calm water without a life jacket. He got the inspiration for the invention four months ago when it was confirmed that the bike route on the Bay Bridge will not connect cyclists with Treasure Island.

Schiller plans to launch his own business selling the BayCycle and predicts that by the fall of 2014, commuters will be lining the surface of the bay. He warned boaters that they’ll soon have to be making way for bicyclists.
