Gun Safety never more important as Michigan man accidentally shoots himself

When a Michigan man was reportedly demonstrating weapon safety, he accidentally shot himself in the head. From Independence Township, the 36-year-old gun safety expert had already been consuming alcohol before teaching the class. Law enforcement found out from the man’s girlfriend that earlier in the day the man had been drinking and when they arrived at the home, she was performing CPR. He was dead on the scene.

Declining to release the man’s name, authorities have notified the family. At the time of the shooting, the man’s girlfriend had been living with him with her three children, ages seven, 10 and 12, reports the Huff Post.

When not loaded, the guns were safe said the man to his girlfriend before the shooting. According to police reports, he put two of the guns to his head and pulled the trigger. But it was when he picked up the third gun, that it discharged and the bullet went into his head.

The county examiner has ruled the man’s death a suicide. A sheriff’s deputy commented that he never heard of testing the safety of a gun by pointing it at the head and pulling the trigger.

Accidental gun discharge incidents have been numerous in the United States, according to the Examiner.

Two weeks ago, a man in Florida accidentally shot himself in the leg after participating in a gun safety class. He had manipulated his weapon in the parking lot, reports said. He survived and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Two other incidents occurred in Michigan and Ohio in the last few months. The Michigan incident involved a man who mistakenly shot his wife in the stomach while cleaning his loaded gun. The Ohio case, which occurred in late 2013, involved a gun safety instructor who accidentally shot one of his students. Not realizing that the gun was loaded, the instructor shot a boy in the arm.

According to Think Progress, gun deaths are poised to surpass car accidents as the leading cause of death among young people.
