Local residents in Cairns were saddened, shocked and embarrassed when they learned that a man had lay dead for 7 days on a traffic island on Spence Street before his body was discovered. A pedestrian who was crossing the street spotted the body, which is likely that of a homeless individual in his 40s.
Police have not released the dead man’s identity while they are trying to contact any family members regarding his passing. A police spokesman said his death was not the result of any foul play since there were no signs of physical attack or violence on his body, but an investigation is underway.
Many in the community insist they are caring people who would never have ignored seeing someone laying on the traffic island on the busy thoroughfare, but it is possible that bushes and other vegetation on the island may have partially obscured the man’s body or passers-by simply thought he was taking a nap.
Police surmise that the fellow may have had too much to drink and fell asleep in the bushes, never to wake up. Many residents think it is a sad commentary on current times when people are too busy to notice a dead body.
