Australian Man Goes Missing After Swimming in Crocodile Infested Waters

Mary River, Northern Territory of Australia – a man from the capital city of this sparsely populated province of Australia celebrated his thirtieth and final birthday yesterday after he made the fateful decision to swim across the crocodile infested Mary River. Call it bravado or foolishness, but the unidentified man and a friend actually had made the swim across the river and were returning back when his friends saw him carried away in the jaws of a large crocodile.

Perhaps the man considered himself somewhat of a real life “Hector Cyr”, the fictional character from the 1999 horror film “Lake Placid”, who was renowned for being able to swim with crocodiles unharmed. Nevertheless, recovery efforts by authorities are strictly looking for his body with no expectation that the man will be found alive.

Locals report that a large crocodile measuring 4.5 meters (~15 feet) has often been seen swimming the waters of the Mary River. Local authorities were quick to caution that this accident was preventable as there were numerous signs along the Mary River warning against swimming in the waters. They say that some people choose to ignore the signs and swim with no incident. They caution that prior successes are no guarantee that subsequent swimming trips will not end tragically.
