Man Sentenced in Toddler Slapping Incident

HANDOUT/REUTERS Joe Rickey Hundley, shown in a mugshot from a previous arrest, pleaded guilty to slapping a crying child on an airplane last February. He was further accused of using a racial slu against the boy.
Atlanta, GA – The worst day in Joe Rickey Hundley’s life got even worse as he flew into Atlanta from on a flight from Minneapolis on February 8, 2013. He had received word that his son was in critical condition following an apparent suicide attempt by injecting a high dose of insulin into his blood stream. He wasn’t flying in to support his son through a tenuous recovery. Rather, he was flying in to witness his brain dead son be taken off life support.
It is a condition that no one would ever want to face. Yet, Hundley had only his thoughts to deal with as the plane flew into Atlanta.
That is when things took a turn for the worse. He had taken alcohol to calm his nerves, but he was a recovered alcoholic.
The baby sitting next to him began to cry aloud and he lost his temper.
He ordered the mother to silence her child referring to it by the pejorative N-word twice. He then slapped the child just below the left eye. He was arrested. The judge in this case gave him a stiffer sentence than what was agreed to in a plea bargain and will require he spend 8 months in prison plus one year of supervised release.
