The public email announcement named Scott Guthrie as the leader of enterpise and cloud, Steven Elop as executive vice-president of devices and Phil Spencer as head of Xbox. Elop is also expected to play a role in the future development of Xbox.
The Xbox has been the focus of years of speculation by analysts and company insiders over its future, namely whether it would become a spin-off. According to a 2013 report by Bloomberg, Elop, who was originally considered as a replacement for former CEO Steve Ballmer, was in favor of Xbox being sold. His view has changed since that time.
During an unveiling of the new Office platform for iOS devices, Nadella stated he plans to shift Microsoft’s focus away from Windows in order to strike a balance with other projects. In a later email, he said the company needs to do everything it can to stay competitive in a digital world that is increasingly mobile and cloud-based.
Nadella, a native of India, was named CEO on February 4, 2014.
