Woman’s Scarf Gets Caught in Escalator and Leads to Her Death

Montreal, Quebec – A woman lost her life in a freak accident on the escalator of the local subway.

According to a bystander, the woman was coming off the escalator when her scarf got caught in the tracks. She tried to jostle the item free and upon bending down, her hair also got stuck in the teeth of the escalator. By the time emergency responders arrived, she was pronounced dead.

Some sources are reporting the cause of death is listed as strangulation. However, the coroner is still conducting the autopsy and inquiry into her death.

Police said the woman was in cardiac arrest when firefighters and paramedics arrived, and she was declared dead at the scene.

The newspaper La Presse has learned that police are looking at camera footage as well.

“While she was trying to pull up her scarf from the escalator, her hair got caught too and from there, everything got tied up at the end of the escalators,” said Const. Jean-Pierre Brabant of the Montreal police.

Thus far, the police have the eye witness account to the accident. The woman’s identity has not yet been made public.

Horrified Bystanders Tried To Help

According to CBC, Bassam Joubarani was walking out of the Fabre Metro station when he saw the woman lying unconscious, at the bottom of the escalators.

“Half her body [was] on the floor, and less than half her body was on the stairs,” said Joubarani, adding that two people were trying to help her.

“She was laying on her back … Her face was normal colour and she was breathing.”

“She got strangled … and the woman passed away on scene,” Brabant said.

The incident occurred this morning at about 9:15AM local time at the Fabre métro station of the subway. If foul play ends up being suspected, it will be similar to the episode of “Mr. Monk goes to Vegas” involving a woman losing her life when her scarf gets intentionally caught in an elevator.

A spokesperson for Urgence Sante provided further details.

“What they found was a woman at the bottom of the escalator who was clearly trapped at the very end with what appeared to be a piece of clothing,” said Robert Lamle.

“Firefighters and paramedics immediately began reanimation efforts, but after going through our entire protocol, it was decided that she was not viable.”
