Move Over Ferrari and McLaren: Here’s the Porsche 918 Hybrid Supercar

German automaker Porsche once again emphasized the power of the oft praised “German ingenuity” when it displayed the new model 918 hybrid supercar at the Frankfurt motor show. The 918 is had 770 horse power in turbo mode and 570 in secondary power mode.

The supercar carries a super price tag at $845,000, but those who own the car will be able to hit peak speeds of 214 mph and enjoy over 70 mpg at the pump to boot. Now, how’s that for a technological smack down on rivals Ferrari and McLaren! So who can afford this feat of engineering? Not everyone that’s for sure, but Porsche claims that it has already taken deposits for advance orders equaling 66% of its intended production volume.

Wouldn’t it be just shiny if the vehicle were to be driven by the fictional character Dominic Toretto played by Vin Diesel in the Fast & Furious franchise? The seventh installment of the film series begins filming this month.

As for the 918, Porsche plans to begin assembly of the vehicles tomorrow at the Zuffenhausen factory located in Germany. The plans are to build a total of 918 models in a lucrative but limited production run.
