Naked Buddhas Too Offensive for Local Authorities in Major Chinese City

Jinan, China – A local Hot Pot Restaurant in this city of 6.8 million people apparently went too far for what local authorities could tolerate when they mounted two massive figures of naked & corpulent Buddhas against the front and back of the building. The pink and puffy nude figures got the nickname in Chinese of “Buddha jumps over the wall” and were quite the site to see.

However, local authorities found the figures to be highly inappropriate and ordered them to be taken down. Incidentally, the nickname mirrors that of a Chinese dish that consists of all the items considered expensive cuisine in the world’s most populous nation. Had it not been for a social networker, the world might not know of the Buddhas. Thankfully, a person by the name of Sina Weibo snapped a picture of the Buddhas which subsequently has gone viral.

Apparently, some Zen Buddhists were not at all tickled by the figures and found them to be “cheeky” indeed. It may be that their complaints prompted authorities to order the removal of the statues. One Zen practitioner and blogger from the Beihai Zen Monastery explained that he found the figures so disrespectful that he was brought to tears at the sight of them.

The South China Morning Press cites one practitioner named Miaoming from the Beihai Zen Monastery in Qinghai province as blogging: “I burst into tears when I saw naked Buddhas climbing over the wall.

“How come a nation with a thousand-year history has so little respect for its own culture?”

Central European News quotes restaurant owner Li Tsui as explaining: “I didn’t want to offend anyone… I simply meant to advertise that and as everybody knows the dish, didn’t think that would be a problem.”
