WHO Characterizes New Bird Flu Strain Among Most Lethal

The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded an urgent alarm regarding the recently discovered new strain of bird flu originating in China.

The bird flu has already caused 22 fatalities and more than 100 hospitalizations in China alone and has already been transported to Taiwan thanks to a businessman who had been travelling in China. Officials at WHO have now classified the unknown virus as one of the most lethal it has encountered in its history. This type of deadly bird flu has been named the H7N9 strain.

So far this H7N9 virus is proving to be resistant to most antibiotic drugs being tried on people experiencing its symptoms.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, have received a sample of the virus directly from Chinese officials in an attempt to investigate it further to find a preventative cure.

So far, officials here say that they believe it is passed primarily from one infected individual to another person. Even if the CDC discovers an effective H7N9 vaccine, developing and distributing it could be at least several months away. Officials report that this flu strain spreads without visible symptoms in chickens and is considered among the most lethal flu strains known to man.
