Newtown Gunman’s Father Meets with Victim’s Parents

Alissa Parker, mother of 6-year old Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victim Emilie Parker, says that her search for answers to her daughter’s senseless death at the hands of gunman Adam Lanza, led her to arrange a meeting with Lanza’s father, Peter Lanza.

She and her husband Robbie met with Lanza’s father recently at an undisclosed location, inspired by Mrs. Parker’s need to obtain answers and some sort of closure over the violent and unexpected death of her young daughter at the hands of the mentally disturbed Adam Lanza.

Alissa Parker told “CBS This Morning” in an excerpt of an interview that aired Thursday the meeting with Adam Lanza’s father, Peter Lanza, was her idea.

“I felt strongly that I needed to tell him something, and I needed to get that out of my system,” Alissa Parker said. “I felt very motivated to do it and then I felt really good about it and prayed about it. And it was something that I needed to do.”

Emilie Parker was among the 20 students and 6 educators gunned down at the school in Newtown, Connecticut.

The Parkers told the news media that they needed to ask Lanza’s dad about Adam’s medical history, his relationship with other family members and other questions that they would not reveal. Peter Lanza’s ex-wife Nancy was also shot and killed by their son, who also took his own life.

“I don’t feel like he should be held responsible for what happened that day,” Allisa Parker told “CBS This Morning,” during the second part of an interview that aired Friday. “That was not ultimately his decision to do that, so how can I hold him responsible? Were there missteps in the raising of his son? Possibly.”

When asked if she can forgive Adam Lenza, the devastated mother said it’s not her burden to bear.

“I do hold him accountable, but I feel like God will determine that,” she said. “And I feel like he’s in a place where the judgment will happen, and I don’t have to. I don’t have to judge him, and I’m at peace with that.”

Adam Lanza, 20, fatally shot 20 children and six educators with a military-style rifle on Dec. 14, then killed himself
