A pair of teenagers walking too close to railroad tracks as they made their way to a Sadie Hawkins dance at the local high school in Marysville, California, were hit by a freight train. The unidentified teenage boy was killed as a result of the collision and his companion, an unidentified teenage girl, was immediately taken by air ambulance to a hospital for treatment of traumatic injuries. Spectators at the adjacent park where Marysville Little League games are played report that they heard a long and slow warning horn just before the train came to an abrupt stop on the tracks.

Many parents at the scene expressed concern that their children wouldn’t see the devastating results that occurred at the accident scene, saying it could scar them for life. One of the spectators said that the boy and girl involved in the accident had a close relationship but did not confirm whether or not they were dating each other. An official from the school confirmed that the pair were walking to the high school to participate in the annual Sadie Hawkins dance, an event where the tables are turned and the girls are the ones asking the boys to dance.

There is no further word on the condition of the surviving teen or the identity of both teenagers. Many community members in Marysville expressed shock and grief that such a tragedy could occur on the second day of spring, saying that members of their community all know one another and take pride in living in a very close-knit town.
