In-Flight Nurse Saves Pilot After Heart Attack

A registered nurse aboard a United Airlines flight travelling between Iowa and California is credited with saving the life of one of the pilots after he suffered a heart attack. Linda Alweiss was quick to respond when the flight crew asked if anyone onboard could provide medical assistance in the cockpit. Alweiss saw the pilot slumped in his seat and recruited her husband along with other passengers to help move him onto the floor.

Alweiss not only started an IV on the stricken captain but also hooked up a defibrillator that is kept on board the aircraft for such emergencies. As the co-pilot made his way toward an emergency landing in nearby Omaha, Alweiss stayed right by the pilot’s side until the plane came to a complete stop at the gate and paramedics boarded the plane in order to transport the captain to a nearby medical facility. Her husband praised his wife’s actions as “heroic” and commended her for jumping right in to help without hesitation. When Alweiss boarded the flight for home the following day, she met up with the co-pilot from her interrupted flight and was glad to discover the good news that the pilot had survived.
