nypd hockey fight: New Yorks Finist In Bench Clearing Hockey Brawl

A not-so-funny thing happened on the way to an exhibition hockey game to benefit charity on Sunday, April 6 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.. A fight broke out between teams representing the New York Police Department and New York Fire Department during the match that was billed as pitting New York’s “Finest and Bravest” against each other.

Benches cleared and punches were thrown in the madcap altercation that erupted during the game. Officials with the NYPD and NYFD refused to comment on the thrilla in the Nassau Coliseum. However, YouTube videos show the brawl as well as fans chanting insults directed at the hockey playing policemen. Some of the derogatory chants directed towards police officers were “PD Sucks” and “Dunkin’ Donuts.”

The original video shows the fracas breaking out in the second period of a game that was knotted up at 3-3. Referees struggled to bring the situation to a close. The video attracted more than 55,000 views. The game ended with the NYPD victorious by an 8-5 score.

Other videos and photos of the brawl were uploaded via Instagram and YouTube. They show the teams streaming off their respective benches with gloves and sticks strewn asunder across the ice. The brawl, and cleanup following the main event, lasted for almost 30 minutes as players retrieved equipment and referees sorted out a long list of penalties and ejections.

Tickets to the grand event cost $20. It’s the first time such an altercation has taken place in the annual event to raise money for worthy causes. However, the rivalry has been heated over the years. Firefighters had been on a five game winning streak. They held a 23-15-2 advantage over the police before the police emerged victorious in the game. No word on who won the fight though.
