NYU Student Rescued After Being Stuck Between Two Buildings For Thirty-Six Hours
An NYU student has been rescued by the FDNY after being lodged in a tiny gap between two buildings for thirty-six hours.
The student, 19 year-old Asher Vongtau, was not reported as a missing person until early Sunday morning even though his friends noticed he was gone around 7am Saturday morning. The authorities reportedly told the friends a person could not be officially reported missing until they had been gone for seventy-two hours. Thankfully, Vongtau’s friends found security guards and voiced their concerns. They noticed he went missing after a fire alarm had been pulled at some point. Security cameras showed him running up the stairs during the fire alarm which was early Saturday morning. After Vongtau’s friends urged Public Safety officials to check the roof for signs of him, they were able to hear him groaning from the gap between the two buildings.
Authorities are not sure how he managed to become stuck in the gap but he may have been under the influence at the time. Thankfully, the FDNY were able to break through a wall and rescue him once they arrived late Sunday afternoon. They also gave him oxygen and IV fluids while they were in the process of extricating him. It took about an hour and a half to safely remove him from the two-foot wide space.
