Is the Pope Considering Changing Celibacy Rules?

“I was dazzled by a girl,” Pope Francis wrote in his 2010 book On Heaven and Earth. He continues, citing that this was a result of “her beauty, her intellectual brilliance.” In fact, he was so smitten with her that he “could not pray for over a week.” This dazzling girl, argue some, could be a strong indicator that the Pope is contemplating changing the celibacy rules of the Catholic Church.

Previously, the Pope has shown much understanding toward those faithful seminarians who face a similar inner conflict, stating that he wants the seminarians to “go in peace to be a good Christian[s].” Additionally, in speaking about Greek Catholic Church priests and other Catholic priests allowed to be married, he described them as “very good priests.”

While the current Pope might have reservations about celibacy, other Popes have reinforced the long-practiced tradition or have ignored the issue altogether, referencing that it was thousands of years worth of tradition.

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, during an interview with CNN, did state, however, that while the Pope’s mission is to “preserve patrimony of the church” it “doesn’t mean he might not change the way it’s presented.”
