Prisoner Nadine Wright Forced To Clean up after Miscarriage

The Leicester Crown Court was told a very disturbing tale recently about a woman in a private prison facility who suffered a miscarriage and then received no help from prison officials in removing the fetus or cleaning up the blood debris that resulted.

Barrister Philip Gibbs reported that 37-year old Nadine Wright miscarried the child she was carrying while being detained inside HMP Peterborough on a charge of stealing food.

Gibbs charges that the woman’s dead fetus was left in her cell and that the prisoner was left to her own devices to clean up after the traumatic event. She was only provided with medical care 72 hours after the miscarriage and only after prison officials were directed to do so by the governor.

The woman’s attorney also charged that she would not have become desperate enough to steal food to eat if probation services would have done its job initially and helped her to secure the public benefits she was entitled to.

It was not known how far advanced her pregnancy was at the time of her arrest and the miscarriage took place after only 24 hours in prison. Gibbs acknowledged Wright has addiction problems in addition to mental health issues.

A prison spokesman said it ‘cannot comment publicly on individual cases’ and refused to say whether any inquiry relating to the alleged incident is being held.

The spokesman added: ‘A prisoner received medical treatment on the day of her arrival in prison and was seen by a GP the following day.

‘We have a duty of care to all prisoners that we hold. As part of that, we ensure that all prisoners have access to the same level of NHS services as those in the community.’
