Russell Crowe Defends Noah Against Protests

Darren Aronofsky is a well respected and critically acclaimed director. He directed the Oscar nominated pro wrestling drama “The Wrestler” and the thriller “The Black Swan” set in the world of professional dance. It’s safe to say that Aronofsky feels free to take creative license when telling a story. It’s not sure if anyone knows that the director expected any controversy or opposition when he agreed to direct the new film Noah based on the story in the Book of Genesis in the Bible.

Aronofsky has gone on the record as an atheist agreed to helm the action movie because he thought it was a though provoking story that could paint the picture of the world’s first environmentalist and could also be a fascinating modern Bible story that could fully utilize the movie making technology and CGI special effects.

There has been a tidal wave of controversy after several conservative Christian groups have complained of the artistic license that the film maker had taken in the re-telling of the story of Noah and his family. The film’s star Russell Crowe stepped in to defend his new movie by even personally contacting representatives at the Vatican to ask Pope Francis to attend a screening of the movie.

The biggest complaints have not fallen on deaf ears. The film’s studio Paramount even took steps to release a statement to the press that the film is simply based on the story of Noah and there was indeed some details of the story that were changed to enhance the film.

This wasn’t Hollywood’s first foray into Bible action stories. Months after the release of such films as “Ben-Hur” and “The Ten Commandments” also saw some feedback from groups representing the Catholic church. Paramount is more worried about how the controversy will affect the film’s opening weekend where movie ticket buyers will be the final judbe.
