On March 7, actor Russell Crowe posted a video on YouTube of a supposed UFO he captured on film while performing night time lapse photography of fruit bats flying in the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens in Australia near his office.

A bright red light and two translucent vertical red bands shift from the left side of the viewing field horizontally to the right side in three movements.

Many Web denizens and critics have attempted to debunk Crowe’s UFO claim. As of this morning, at least one other theory seems plausible.

ParaBreakdown’s Phil Poling reveals that the video shows long-exposure capture and not time lapse. Long-exposure brightens and stretches light images and cause other objects to fade or disappear. Between Crowe’s office and the gardens is a waterway. According to Poling, The “UFO” is a red light atop a sailboat. The bands are the main and aft masts.

Meanwhile, media outlets report that the general response to the alleged extraterrestrial object has been mocking disbelief.

Hundreds of comments posted in response to the YouTube clip include alternative explanations, requests for his drug dealer’s number, as well as a smattering of support, reports the Huffington Post.

“Cool photos and video. Definitely caught some? odd phenomena. 100% UFO,” wrote YouTube user “maluminse1.”
