Critic Savages Sarah Silverman’s “We Our Miracles” HBO Comedy

Actress Sarah Silverman has built her career on pushing the envelope on sensitive or taboo subject material with her comedic pithiness and perceived quirkiness. However, film critic Brian Lowry has cracked her HBO Comedy “We Are Miracles” in the head with an iron frying pan. Lowry said her jokes pushed so far past the edge that any possible humor was blunted by sheer raunchiness. In one respect, Lowry believes Silverman may be trying to prove that she can be one of the boys when it comes to distasteful blue humor.

“There’s something simultaneously fascinating and maddening about Sarah Silverman — graced with genuine talent and a well-defined comedic persona on one hand, and a commitment to pushing past the edge in a way that blunts her appeal on the other,” Lowry began his review.

In addition, Lowry claims that Silverman attempted humor mainly by employing shock value. He believes that the 42-year-old entertainer from Manchester has plenty of techniques she can employ for quality humor. He did not understand why she failed to draw upon those skills for this comedy special.

“This isn’t mean to suggest that female comics can’t work blue,” he explained in his review. “The lament here is that in the wrong hands it can feel gratuitous or become a crutch, whereas unlike many of her contemporaries, Silverman has enough tools that she can and should do more.”

Silverman recently appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Show holding a box labeled “Jimmy’s Stuff” from which she began to return personal effects from her former paramour. It was meant to be funny and promote her upcoming comedy special, but instead it turned out uncomfortable for both of them especially when she confessed that she had loved him. Ultimately, it will be the audiences who determine how successful her comedy special turns out to be. Thus far, things don’t bode well for it.
