Scarlett Johansson Drops Support of Humanitarian Group Over Soda Stream Endorsement

Oxfam International is the name given to a loose conglomeration of 17 organizations which seek to eradicate world poverty and hunger. They have a presence in 90 nations and the support of various celebrities. However, they’ll have to do with one less after they pushed the envelope with actress Scarlett Johansson.

Johansson, the 29-year-old star of the “Avengers” franchise, had recently entered into an agreement to endorse the popular soda fountain product called Soda Stream, an Israeli West Bank-based company. The forth coming ad will also feature her fellow “Avengers” co-stars and air during the Super Bowl, which is the prime annual event for commercials.

However, Oxfam has criticized Johansson’s endorsement deal with SodaStream International LTD. Oxfam believes that the government of Israel is oppressing Palestinians in the West Bank and needs to be punished with economic sanctions as opposed to key celebrity endorsements. Johansson deeply disagrees with Oxfam and has formally terminated her relationship with the group. Bear in mind that while Johansson is still a young adult woman, she has been promoting the group via fund raisers for eight years now. Oxfam apparently went too far in turning on someone who has been providing them support most of her adult life.
