Jaw-dropping moment seal escapes Great White shark

It is hard to decide which is more amazing: a seal balancing on the nose of an attacking great white shark before jumping to its escape or the fact that the photographer, David Jenkins, was able to capture the moment on film. Jenkins was on a shark viewing tour off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa when the amazing escape happened.

Apparently, great white sharks often miss their prey when surfacing from below.

This shark was just slightly off the mark, and he ended up pushing the seal up into the air with his nose.

The seal was swimming back to Seal Island in False Bay after having eaten out in open waters. As the seals swim back the great whites circle below, waiting to pick off one of the pack for a meal. The attacks come as total surprises as the shark rockets toward the surface at speeds that can exceed 25 miles an hour.

The sight of the breeching great whites as they blast through the surface is incredible, and this was even more spectacular given that the seal ended up clinging to the shark’s nose. It was only luck that let that seal swim away unscathed.
