Latest Internet Meme: Selfies at Funerals

The Tumblr-based website “Selfies at Serious Places” makes their mark on the internet community by encouraging selfies at noteworthy places. Now, selfies are not big deal as they are done by the famous icons such as Beyoncé & Kim Kardashian at every imaginable place from restaurants, hotel bedrooms, etc. However, what makes “Selfies at Serious Places” interesting is the photographs must be at places that make the photograph blur the line of what’s appropriate such as a selfie at Chernobyl or the Anne Frank Memorial.

Now, the home of extreme-selfies is encouraging photographs at funerals. The appeal for these types of self-portraits has remained almost entirely with teenagers and this latest meme is no different. The funeral selfies must include trademark lip pouting or otherwise serious or distorted facial poses. It should be noted that many of the teens submitting photographs comment on the merits of their hair.

Yes, it is shallow. Yes, it is pushing the envelope of what is appropriate. Yes, these teens may well regret having posted the selfies once their brains mature, but it beats them taking drugs. Thus far, there hasn’t been any submission allowed that featured any casket photograph be they open or closed. Thankfully.
