Survivor of Great White Shark Attack Bears No Ill Will
Queenstown, New Zealand – Darren Mills of England was enjoying himself surfing off the shores of the Porpoise Bay when he was attacked by a great white shark. The powerful man-eater latched onto his right leg for what Mills recounts was a brief four second interlude. During that time, he literally fought for his life striking the shark repeatedly on its nose because he understood it was a sensitive spot for the apex predator.

Mills explained that he went after the shark’s nose with such energy that he was determined to remove its snout. His efforts paid off because the shark released him and withdrew. He paddled his way back to shore on his surfboard where a friend applied a tourniquet to his leg. It was also his good fortune that an off-duty paramedic was nearby to treat him until help arrived.

After this harrowing experience, he says that he doesn’t bear his would-be killer any ill-will. Neither has the experience deterred him from surfing. However, that last statement is more of a hope. He won’t recover from the severe wounds to his leg for a year which will be plenty of time to reevaluate returning to the sport.
