Shubham Banerjee braille printer: 12-Year-Old Creates Low-Cost Braille Printer

The next time your kid has his or her room a complete mess with lego, you might want to let them be.

There`s a good chance that Shubham Banerjee, a California seventh grader, did the same before he created a braille printer out of Lego for a science fair project.

NCC news reports, Braille printers cost about $2,000 but Banerjee`s comes in at around $350.

That`s what he paid for a Lego Mindstorms EV3 kit along with a few dollars of hardware from Home Depot, cnet.com reported.

It says Banerjee took a basic, pre-existing pattern for a printer and reworked it with new software and hardware enhancements to print out letters in braille.

Shubham spent four weeks working on the project at his family’s kitchen table, sometimes late into the night.

He calls his creation the Braigo.

The Braigo’s controller is set up to scroll through the alphabet, cnet explains. You choose a letter and it prints it out with tactile bumps on a roll of calculator paper. The print head is actually a thumbtack, which Banerjee settled on after also testing a small drill bit and a mechanical pencil.

Banerjee, who has relatives in Toronto, has even been praised by LEGO.

The Lego Group voiced their praise for the project, tweeting: “We’re very proud. Impressive work for a great cause!”
