south korea military cadets challenge sex ban
The South Korean military was upbraided by the court for abusing its authority when it removed an officer candidate from its ranks for having sexual intercourse with his girlfriend while he was officially off duty IE on leave. The military’s intention was challenged in court and the candidate has prevailed with the court barring the military from removing him.
However, the military has made it clear they are going to challenge the ruling. The army is adamant that the code of conduct among candidates specifically bars them from getting married, smoking, drinking, and engaging in conjugal visits. In the case of the expected officer candidate, a third party ratted him out after seeing him enter an apartment with his girlfriend.
Military careers in South Korea continue to maintain a high level of visibility and respect in Korean society. It is not unusual for officers to launch political careers later in life and two graduates of this prestigious academy later served as president.
The specific rules have been in place for over fifty years now and the military is attempting to maintain stability in a rapidly evolving society. It is true that South Korean values are more liberal than they were two generations ago, but the military will not budget on its standards.
