Egypt Plagued by Swarms of Locusts

The infestation seems almost Biblical in porportion as residents of Cairo, Egypt deal with the problem of swarms of locusts in recent weeks.

Their numbers have been so intense that Egyptians have begun burning tires out of doors in order to create a haze of black smoke that discourages the insects from hanging around.

The locust swarms were first spotted earlier in the year around the area of the Red Sea, as well as in Saudia Arabia and the Sudan. Officials deny that the locusts have as yet caused any damage to Egyptian agricultural crops because the swarms contain insects that have not as yet sexually matured. City officials are asking that the public not panic about the unsettling swarms of locusts and advises against burning tires or any other substances because the smoke created could cause damage to humans as well as other crops in addition to setting accidental fires.
