Toronto Police Discover Underground Tunnel

A Toronto and Region Conservation Authority employee saw something unusual and decided to investigate. What they found was a tunnel in a wooded area near the same area where the Pan Am games are scheduled to be held. The size of the tunnel suggests that it is big enough for a human being to stand in.

A generator and some tools were found near the site as well. Officials contacted local gas stations to find out if anyone has been frequenting the business to fill up gas cans. This might indicate who is responsible for digging the tunnel. Gas is necessary in order to run the generator to get electricity to the sophisticated underground building.

Officers stated that they did not believe it was being used as an illegal drug making facility. Officials at the school, as well as police officers, wonder if there were ill intentions towards the tennis games that will be played there. They are not sure who built it; however, they will continue their effort to find out.

Ray Boisvert, the former assistant director of intelligence at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service said the discovery raises some important questions.

“First and foremost is the question around the context of the tunnel — where it is positioned? How deep was it? How accessible was it? And what sort of things could be sent through that tunnel, being people or material,” Boisvert said.

Rexall Center and York University officials said that they will not comment on the investigation because it is against policy to do so. Employees of the Rexall Center and York University are cooperating with police to find out what the tunnel is all about. In the meantime, the tunnel was filled in so that it can no longer be used for whatever purpose it was placed there for. Police officers are in place around the University and the woods surrounding the tunnel to help keep out further intruders.
